Welcome to West Telemark Museum

The organisation West-Telemark Museum was established in 2002 with the goal of managing the running and maintenance of the various museums in West Telemark. The museums are spread across 5 districts and include:
Vinjestoga, Myllarheimen, Knut Skinnarland samlinga, Dyre Vaa samlingane, Vinje Biletgalleri, Øyfjell Bygdemuseum, Fyresdal Bygdemuseum, Kviteseid Bygdetun, Åmdals Verk Gruver,  VTM Eidsborg, Norsk Skieventyr


West Telemark as a region boasts many traditional art forms and has a ski history that has changed the way the way the world now skis. West-Telemark Museum preserves and shares this precious cultural heritage through exhibitions, activities and arrangements. West Telemark has also produced a number of talented and well known artists and in our museums you will find many good examples of their work in the form of paintings, photographs and sculptures. Several of our museums provide activities for children and some also offer the sale of refreshments.  
The Norsk Skieventyr in Morgedal is open all year round and it is here that you can learn more about the amazing ski history from Morgedal and Telemark. In addition to the multimedia museum there is a large souvenir shop and the Innsving café which is famous for great homemade food, large portions and sensible prices.

 Development in West-Telemark Museum
“Headquarters central” in Eidsborg is now undergoing an extensive rebuilding process. The new complex has a projected completion date – late 2011 with the ambition that the complex will open to the public June 1.  2012.

Development of the new building includes over 1000m2 renovation work with the addition of another 1400m2 museum space and 400m2 workshop space. The new complex will include a public foyer, café, exhibition rooms, teaching room, library, archive rooms, offices and meeting rooms.
 What is happening in Eidsborg during this development?
Despite the ongoing building work Eidsborg stave church, the Uppistog courtyard with all the buildings and the cafe in Larsstoga will be open.  Activities for children and walkers outside the museum will still be available but the museum itself will be closed during the building period.

In the movie “Frikaren på ski” you can see how Sondre revolutionized skiing and gave rise to modern ski sport. Words like Slalom, Telemark-landing and Telemark-turn have their origins in Morgedal and Telemark. The new skis you buy today are still built on Sondre`s principles.
