Sculptor Tor Vaa began as a student in his father Dyre Vaa’s studio when he was 18 years old. When he was 19, he made his debut at Haustutstillinga, the fall art exhibition in Oslo, with a portrait of his sister Anne Joronn. Tor Vaa studied at the art academy in Oslo, at the academy in Copenhagen, and also went on several study-trips to Europe.
Much of his work portrays animals and nature, and includes busts, drawings and paintings. One of his most well-known works of art is ” 7 år,” or ”7 years, ” a bust of his sister Sissel. It contributed to his receiving an annual artist’s stipend from the state as of the year 1949. He also received another state stipend, the Statens garantiinntekt in 1979, and Vinje Municipality’s artist’s stipend in 1990.

In the museum at ¨yfjell there is a liquor barrel with a registered card which claims the barrel belong to the Frenchmen Bëzier and Rollier who in 1870 travelled from Paris to Lifjell in B¸. What makes this journey unique was the fact that it took place in a hot air balloon.
